A' Design Award and Competition
This 150 sq. ft. office in Mumbai for a design-and-build company is a perfect example of how compact office spaces can be transformed to meet functional requirements while making a lasting impression.
The layout follows a parallel line concept, with workstations, lighting, and brass inlay lines on the terrazzo floor all aligned along the walls to create a cohesive flow. The white terrazzo flooring with brass leaf inserts complements the greenery outside, visually extending the view of plants and trees through the window.
A minimal white palette for the floor, walls, and storage units enhances the sense of openness, making the small office look spacious. The design plays with textures throughout—polished concrete surfaces, hand-plastered ceilings, exposed brick walls, fluid-shaped partitions, and woven chairs—seamlessly blending tactile variety into a cohesive aesthetic.
The heart of the space is the sample wall adjoining the staircase, a curated collage of materials collected over the years, reflecting the company’s creative journey. With abundant natural light and thoughtful design details, this tiny office offers a comfortable, functional, and visually engaging work environment.
Between the Lines
Q1. What was the main challenge and intent behind designing this office?
The biggest challenge was to make a 150 sq. ft. space functional, comfortable, and expressive of a design-and-build company’s personality. The intent was to show how even compact spaces can feel inspiring and efficient with thoughtful planning.
Q2. How was the layout conceived for such a small footprint?
The layout follows a parallel line concept — all workstations, lighting, and floor inlays run along the walls in a linear rhythm. This creates visual flow and clarity, allowing every inch to serve a purpose without feeling cluttered.
Q3. How does the flooring contribute to the overall design language?
The white terrazzo flooring with brass leaf inlays adds subtle luxury while reflecting natural light. The brass lines echo the concept of continuity, and the material’s polished surface connects visually to the greenery outside, extending the perception of space.
Q4. Why was a white palette chosen?
A minimal white palette for walls, storage, and floors enhances brightness and makes the compact space appear larger. It also provides a neutral backdrop for textures and materials to shine without overwhelming the senses.
Q5. How does texture play a role in this project?
Texture is the key to warmth and character here. From polished concrete to exposed brick, hand-plastered ceilings, woven chairs, and fluid partitions, every surface introduces tactile contrast while maintaining aesthetic cohesion.
Q6. What is the significance of the sample wall?
The sample wall is the creative heart of the office — a curated collage of materials collected over years of projects. It tells the story of the studio’s design journey, turning memory and process into a visual narrative.
Q7. How does natural light enhance the experience of the space?
Natural light floods in through the window overlooking lush greenery, blurring the boundary between indoors and outdoors. This connection adds calmness and a feeling of openness, making the workspace energizing yet soothing.
Q8. What strategies were used to balance function with aesthetics?
Every design element — from aligned lighting to built-in storage — serves dual purposes: efficiency and visual refinement. The layout is planned to maximize usability without compromising on elegance or creative expression.
Q9. What makes this compact office stand out?
Despite its small size, the office embodies ZERO9’s ethos of thoughtful design — where craft, materiality, and proportion create impact. It proves that size doesn’t limit experience when design thinking leads the way.
Q10. In one line, how would you describe this workspace?
A tiny yet timeless studio — where every line, surface, and texture tells a story of design clarity and creative spirit.
