Casa Desi — Luxury India Modern Jodi Flat | South Mumbai | ZERO9
A South Mumbai home where Indian craft traditions, Raja Ravi Verma artworks, and contemporary living find perfect balance.
THE BRIEF
The clients came with a clear cultural identity and a home full of curated objects, art, and travel memories accumulated over a lifetime. The brief was to give all of it — the Raja Ravi Verma paintings, the collected curios, the festive rituals — a home that could hold it all with grace. We designed around India Modern: a design language that is rooted in Indian craft traditions but entirely contemporary in its composition. Nothing forced, nothing nostalgic for nostalgia's sake. Just a home that feels completely, irreplaceably theirs.
THE ENTRANCE
The home announces itself before you step inside. A handcrafted entrance door with intricate detailing opens onto a custom foyer with brass-inlaid cement tiles and Jaisalmer stone flooring — a combination that sets the material language for everything that follows. Indian craftsmanship, from the first step.
THE LIVING ROOM
The living room is the cultural heart of the home. Jaisalmer stone flooring is paired with vibrant Athangudi tiles, vintage lamps, and a bamboo-framed corner housing a serene Krishna idol. Behind a modern sofa, Shiva wooden carvings sit alongside Raja Ravi Verma paintings — a juxtaposition that is Casa Desi in a single frame. Traditional and contemporary, not in tension but in conversation.
THE DINING ROOM
The dining space is a showcase of travel memories — collected curios, objects from across India and beyond, arranged with the considered casualness of a well-travelled home. Every shelf tells a story. Every object has a reason.
THE MANDIR
The Mandir is designed for both daily devotion and festive celebration. A saffron accent wall, an onyx backdrop, and a semi-private partition create a space that transforms during Navratri and Ganesh Chaturthi — becoming the spiritual and social heart of the home when it matters most.
THE MASTER BEDROOM
A carved sandstone bed-back sets the tone — textural, warm, and deeply Indian. Woven cane wardrobes, warm wooden flooring, and a luxurious black chevron-tiled bathroom complete the suite. The master bedroom is where the India Modern aesthetic is most fully realised — every material chosen for its craft story, not just its appearance.
THE GUEST BEDROOM
City views, graphical flooring patterns, and muted luxury. The guest bedroom offers a quieter version of the home's design language — understated but entirely considered.
THE MOTHER'S ROOM
Classic black-and-white artwork paired with Athangudi tile accents. A room that honours a quieter, more personal aesthetic while remaining fully part of the home's design narrative.
THE SON'S ROOM
A large work desk, magnetic shutters, and a minimal geometric-tiled bathroom. Practical, clean, and designed to grow with the occupant.

BETWEEN THE LINES
What is Casa Desi by ZERO9? Casa Desi is a 2000 sq ft luxury jodi flat in South Mumbai, designed and built by ZERO9 for a family with a deep connection to Indian art, craft, and travel. The home is designed in the India Modern aesthetic — rooted in Indian craft traditions, expressed through a refined contemporary lens. It features Raja Ravi Verma paintings, Athangudi tiles, Jaisalmer stone flooring, brass-inlaid cement tiles, and a festive onyx Mandir.
What is the India Modern design style used in Casa Desi? India Modern is a design language that draws from India's rich craft heritage — Jaisalmer stone, Athangudi tiles, brass inlay work, woven cane, sandstone carving — and presents them within a clean, contemporary spatial framework. It is neither purely traditional nor purely modern, but a refined synthesis of both. Casa Desi is one of ZERO9's fullest expressions of this aesthetic.
What are Athangudi tiles and why are they used in Casa Desi? Athangudi tiles are handmade cement tiles from the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu, known for their vivid geometric patterns and natural pigments. They are one of India's most distinctive craft-based flooring traditions. In Casa Desi, they are used in the living room alongside Jaisalmer stone to create a flooring composition that is both regionally rooted and visually striking.
What Raja Ravi Verma artworks are in Casa Desi? Casa Desi features Raja Ravi Verma paintings as primary focal points in the living room — displayed behind the main sofa alongside Shiva wooden carvings. Raja Ravi Verma (1848–1906) is widely regarded as one of India's greatest painters, known for his mythological subjects rendered in a European academic style. His works anchor the cultural identity of the home.
What is a jodi flat and how was it designed in Casa Desi? A jodi flat is two adjacent apartments merged into a single larger home — a common reconfiguration in South Mumbai's older residential stock. In Casa Desi, ZERO9 rethought the combined footprint to create a fluid, coherent home with distinct zones for living, dining, the Mandir, bedrooms for different family members, and a garden balcony — all unified by the India Modern material language.
How was the Mandir designed in Casa Desi? The Casa Desi Mandir features a saffron accent wall, an onyx stone backdrop, and a semi-private partition that allows the space to be opened up for festivals like Navratri and Ganesh Chaturthi. It functions as both a daily devotional space and a festive centrepiece — designed to transform the home's atmosphere during celebrations.
